Standing By for a Flight Change

You want to change your flight but don't want to get stuck with the fee?For nonrefundable domestic discount tickets, most major airlines now charge $75 to reschedule-- except in a few instances.

If you get to the airport early and your airline has an earlier departure to your destination, you can stand by for a seat and avoid the change fee. The same applies if you miss your flight and stand by for a later one. But both exemptions are good only on standbys and only for the same day you are ticketed to travel. If you call ahead for a firm reservation on that earlier or later flight, the fee will kick in. (Should the carrier cancel your flight, it will, of course, put you on another one without the charge.)
