T+L Reports: Spice Island

Since the opening of the star-studded Laluna resort in 2001, all eyes have been on Grenada. Now its latest addition, Bel Air Plantation, on 18 acres overlooking a bay dotted with classic wooden sailboats, intends to draw even more attention to the tiny spice island. Owner Susan Fisher left a career as a fashion executive to create this mini-Caribbean village, with an art gallery, café, market, and 11 bungalows that cascade down the hill to the shore. Standing on stilts and painted in cheery jewel tones, the traditional gingerbread bungalows, set amid rambling mango and papaya orchards, are connected by walking paths marked with nutmeg shells.

At dusk, rum cocktails are served on the restaurant's cedar verandas, just above the beach where the first French settlers landed some 350 years ago. Bel Air Plantation, St. David, Grenada; 473/444-6305; www.belairplantation.com; villas from $250.
