The blink-and-you’ve-missed-it Litchfield county town of Warren, Connecticut, has officially become a destination, thanks to the single-block stretch of Cornwall Road that residents call “downtown.” Four months ago, Lambertson Truex cofounder (and weekend area-resident) Richard Lambertson opened Privet House, a sophisticated country emporium with smart accessories for dog owners, plus unexpected international finds: handblown glass candlesticks and bowls from Belgium, silver from assorted grand hotels and steamship lines in Europe. “I had just opened three Lambertson Truex stores, so I had a little downtime,” Lambertson explains. “I packed my bags, flew to Paris, Belgium, and Florence, and went on a shopping spree.” Lambertson was persuaded to open the business by Suzanne Cassano, his business partner, who also runs Vol.1, an eclectic shop a few steps away with a spare, urban-gallery sensibility. The first clue that Vol.1 is not a spot for twee antiques is the zebra head hanging on the wall near a pair of bleached mahogany cabinets from the 1940’s. For such a small town, there’s even a surprisingly design-conscious place to stay: the Rooster Tail Inn, a new B&B with six suites, a wine bar, a fully equipped gym and steam room, and a stone barn overlooking a tranquil pond.
