London-based celebrity makeup artist Jemma Kidd knows all about destination weddings: she recently tied the knot on Barbados. Here, her beauty tips and favorite products for tropical brides.
"Less is more when it comes to warm-weather beauty—you don't want to melt under the sun," advises newlywed Jemma Kidd, whose cosmetics line debuted in March. The former model and founder of a top London makeup school is skilled at battling sun, wind, and humidity while creating picture-perfect looks.
RELY ON A PROFESSIONAL Practice technique and select colors with a makeup artist before you leave. "Some pros are adept at working under hot lights and will know how to handle heat," Kidd explains. "So make sure to ask when checking out résumés."
SET A SOLID FOUNDATION Apply a lightweight, cream-based foundation and use it only where needed. Try • Kevyn Aucoin's Sensual Skin Enhancer, which works as both sheer coverall and concealer, or • Jemma Kidd's Light as Air Foundation. Another tip: "Bring two shades, so you can color-match when you tan—very important for photos."
REMEMBER THE LEGWORK Keep your skin healthy by using vitamin-E-and-aloe-enriched products. "Get a facial the week before your wedding, exfoliate the day before, and drench your skin overnight in moisturizer," says Kidd, who recommends • Tracie Martyn's gentle Enzyme Exfoliant.
MIND THE SUN Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a UV ray-repelling ingredient like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. You should select a version with an SPF between 15 and 30. Those below 15 aren't strong enough, while those over 30 often have allergy-inducing amounts of chemicals. Try • AmorePacific's Natural Protector SPF 30/PA—it controls perspiration with the natural component silica.
GO NATURAL Choose colors that complement your skin, and add a little glow with silver or gray eye shadow. Rather than mascara, opt for a lash tint, which looks lighter and won't smudge. For a natural flush, use a cheek stain instead of blush. Finish off by outlining and filling lips with a liner, then cover with gloss.
