Roll With It

Meet the next generation of ingenious putters.

From September 2005

Ping G5i B60
Ping's latest, the G5i B60 ($135 MSRP), has two face inserts—a visible one that is firm to produce an appealing, muted sound and a softer one behind it for more precise feel. A crescent-shaped top rail and blue, lined insert in the flange enhance alignment. The new G5i collection has eleven models in all. Call 800-474-6434 or visit pinggolf.com.

TaylorMade Rossa Monza Corza
The new Monza Corza ($208 MSRP/$179 street) extends TaylorMade's movable-weight franchise into putters. Here, you don't shift the weight around to fight pushes and pulls but rather to modify the clubhead to the overall weight you desire, via two side-by-side ports on the rear. A grooved, soft-metal face insert is designed to get the ball rolling faster with reduced bounce and skid. In three shaft configurations, face-balanced. Call 800-888-2582 or visit taylormadegolf.com.

Titleist Scotty Cameron Futura Phantom
Scotty Cameron's Futura Phantom ($285 MSRP) is a sleeker update of his two-year-old Futura, which helped start the trend toward radical oversize designs. Gone are the three holes in the T-frame bar, replaced by a single sight line; also, the sole rudders have been extended for better stability at setup. But the milled aluminum face remains, as does the semicircular backweight for balance and forgiveness on off-center hits. Call 866-841-0100 or visit scottycameron.com.

Wilson Staff KC4
All four of Kirk Currie's new designs for Wilson Staff have interchangeable weights in both the clubhead and the grip end of the shaft to let players adjust feel for their taste or for particular greens. The KC4 model ($299 MSRP/$179 street) is a mallet with arrowlike alignment markings on top and a weight plate set beneath the back of the head for maximum forgiveness. Also available are a smaller mallet, a semi-mallet and a heel-toe weighted version. Call 800-469-4576 or visit wilsonstaff.com.

Callaway i-Trax
Interchangeable alignment strips are the main innovation in Callaway's i-Trax ($290 MSRP/$239 street). If the three Callaway chevrons on the top of the clubhead are too busy for you, you can screw in a different plate with three white lines that point down the target line. Three permanent weights in the heel, toe and back of the sole improve stability. Milled from black anodized aluminum, this mallet sets up beautifully and has great sound. Call 800-588-9836 or visit callawaygolf.com.

Lopaka
Naturally we were dubious, but the Lopaka ($125 MSRP) puts a mean putt on the ball. The cylindrical head— the same diameter as a golf ball—makes consistent contact on or just above the ball's equator, even for those players with extreme forward presses, as the clubface loft is always effectively zero. In treated aluminum; with a straight or offset shaft, face-balanced or toe-weighted. Call 206-714-6656 or visit lopakagolf.com.

Tour Edge Hovercraft
The Tour Edge Hovercraft ($129 MSRP) is spacey to look at but easy to use, especially from the fringe. Twin rails on the sole raise the exceptionally shallow head to the level of the ball's equator; the resulting strike minimizes backspin and skid. The clubhead, milled from an aluminum block, has two tungsten weights to make it pleasingly heavy and resistant to twisting. Call 800-515-3343 or visit touredge.com.

Gaim G360
The Gaim G360 ($149 MSRP) looks like a doughnut but works like a charm. We very much liked the high- contrast alignment markings around the center hole. The clubhead is made from a soft tungsten composite; it has heft, heel-toe weighting and a center of gravity above the midline to get the ball rolling with topspin fast. Bonus: The hole in the middle will pick up your ball. Call 877-424-4246 or visit gaimgolf.com.

IN THE LOCKER

According to Adidas, your shoes are no longer just footwear—they're equipment. Well, the new ADIDAS TOUR 360 ($180; 800-888-2582 or adidasgolf.com)—as seen on the feet of Retief Goosen, Sergio Garcia and others—won't by themselves add five yards to your drives, but they will improve your golf experience, with the finest leather, a shock-absorbing heel and great looks to boot. The name comes from the 360-degree midfoot wrap, designed for extra stability.

Inevitably, other companies have jumped on the movable-weight concept pioneered by TaylorMade last year with its r7 driver. The ADAMS REDLINE RPM 460 DUAL DRIVER ($349 MSRP/$299 street; 800-709-6142 or adamsgolf.com) is a 460-cc club with two ports offering fourteen grams of weight you can move to engineer draw, fade or neutral ball flights. (By comparison, TaylorMade's dual-port r5 TP comes standard with twelve grams of movable weight.) With a composite crown and excellent forgiveness, the Adams delivers lots of bang for the buck.

As you'd expect from a clothing line with the Tiger Woods label, the new NIKE TW WOOL PERFORMANCE JACKET ($160; 888-799-6453 or nikegolf.com) is a golf jacket with style. Handsome and sleek, it's also wind resistant and water repellent, quiet during the swing, and features shoulder panels cut for golf. Ideal for autumn, both on the course and on the way to a casual dinner. In black only.
