"I remember seeing this course for the first time," says its head pro, Brian Linton. "And if I didn't know I was in Florida, I would have sworn I was somewhere else." Indeed, the Quarry course, built by Tom Fazio in 1987 and part of the private Black Diamond Ranch in Citrus County, eighty miles north of Tampa, features such atypical Sunshine State attributes as huge elevation drops, rolling fairways and the eponymous limestone cliffs. On the fifteenth, the 358-yard par four seen here, Linton prefers to play his tee shot 260 yards to the small, elevated landing area to the right. "Then it's like a little downhill par three from there," he says. There are forty-five Fazio-designed holes in all at Black Diamond, the most recent nine opening in 1999. The gated community—you must live there to be a member—has 795 homesites, with just over a hundred remaining. For information, call 800-328-8099 or visit blackdiamondranch.com.
