Road-Trip Reading

Like this article?

From Jack Kerouac’s On the Road to John Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley, the cross-country road trip has made for great book material. And now comes editor and publisher Carll Tucker, who got behind the wheel of an RV to visit the grave sites of 65 presidents and vice presidents, which he writes about in The Bear Went over the Mountain (Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., $20). Whether he’s at James Polk’s resting place, in Nashville, or Thomas Jefferson’s former house in Monticello, Virginia, Tucker seeks out the presidents’ uncensored histories, and his historical quest ultimately evolves into a personal one. “I learned to question what I was raised to think—about our country’s leaders and myself.”
