Returning to the Greek isle where her parents built a rambling mansion overlooking a bay—"a long blue swirl straight from the tube marked Ultramarine"—the author of Sylvia and Ted recalls the delicious pleasures of childhood summers and island life.
T+L contributor Thomas Beller collects vivid reports about September 11 in Before & After: Stories from New York (Mr. Beller's Neighborhood Books, $13). The Before section has amusing Manhattan vignettes from writers such as Michael Cunningham and Luc Santé; flip the book over for After's harrowing you-are-there accounts.
Other cities may dispute the title now, but in the first half of the 20th century there was no doubt which was on top. Paris: Capital of the Arts (Abrams, $75) explores the febrile period when Cubism, Surrealism, and other art movements sprang to life. A companion exhibition runs at the Guggenheim Bilbao, May 21—September 3.
