MUSIC: Revolution Hall

This 840-seat music spot in the rehabbed Washington High School on the Central Eastside was an instant hit when Neko Case performed at the opening last spring. There’s a certain frisson in wandering past lockers en route to the bar and (legally) sipping cocktails on the roof of a former school.

LITERATURE: Portland Arts & Lectures

Big names headline this top-notch literary series, run by the nonprofit Literary Arts. The 2015 season includes Anthony Doerr, Adam Gopnik, Mohsin Hamid, Claudia Rankine, and Jane Smiley.

CONTEMPORARY PERFORMANCE ART: Yale Union

Avant-garde musicians, dancers, playwrights, and so-called noise artists from all over the world perform at this contemporary arts space in Southeast Portland, located in a beautiful 1908 industrial laundry building.
