Amsterdam’s Olympic Quarter is on the rise after recent redevelopment. Now, two hot new pop-up restaurants are drawing in even more crowds.
Recent redevelopment around Amsterdam’s Olympic Quarter—the area surrounding its 1930s Olympic Stadium, a short tram or bike ride from the city center—has resulted in several stylish, not to mention delicious, new pop-up restaurants. The former Citroën showroom and garage, a pair of striking white Modernist buildings flanking the stadium itself, are now temporarily home to two distinctly cool eateries with a lot to offer in atmosphere and taste. Here’s what you'll find at both.
Inside the former Citroën showroom, Baut Zuid (pictured) is a pop-up with a flawless pedigree: the owner’s Baut restaurant, now closed, was rated a legendary 10 out of 10 by the Netherlands’ most popular food critic. Baut Zuid has a large, sunny terrace and a vast interior partly filled with music, art and design. It’s a great, versatile spot for breakfast, lunch, drinks and dinner—don’t miss the many croissant variations on offer in the morning, or the steak or seafood tartare in the evening. Open seven days a week, you can enjoy it through October 1.
Nearby, this temporary dinner spot (end date TBD) is on the second floor of the old Citroën parking garage. It has it all: a quirky location with superb views, a wonderful atmosphere and memorable food and wine options (the asparagus with poached egg and expertly executed Hollandaise sauce are non-pareil). The sleek, bubble gum-pink tables and chairs take the hard edge off the grey industrial interior, and while the dishes are few in number, they’re wonderfully done (made by the same team behind the highly rated Goudfazant restaurant in Amsterdam Noord). The restaurant shares the space with an art/photography gallery—making the experience feel like more than just a meal.
