Play Away

Red Sky Golf Club (Greg Norman), Wolcott, CO
The Norman brings greater challenge if a tad less eye candy than its Irish twin sister, the Fazio—especially for bombers. Norman knows how long hitters think (particularly from elevated tees at almost 8,000 feet), and you'll pay dearly for not living up to your self-image. Dense, multihued rough often cuts into the deep reaches of the landing areas, and nasty nests of bunkers line most fairways and surround most greens. (The putting surfaces prove straightforward.) On every hole you can hear Norman baiting you to "go for it, mate." Don't listen unless you survive the first five holes unscathed. By then you'll know this isn't resort fodder; it's high-stakes, high-country target golf.

Yardage/Par: 7,580/72. Greens Fee: $200. Tee Times: 866-873-3759 or visit redskygolfclub.com.

First Flight Centennial Celebration

WHERE: Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina

WHEN: December 12-17, 2003

WHAT: Each day will feature aviation exhibits, an air show and live music from acts including Ray Charles. Other special events include aircraft demonstrations and a reenactment of the First Flight at the exact time and site of the Wright brothers' historic launch. For complete schedule and ticket information, call 800-973-7327 or visit firstflightcentennial.org.

STAY: Local hotels will sell out fast, so consider renting a cottage in Nags Head Village, which houses Nags Head Golf Club. Most have sunset views over Roanoke Sound and run $595-$1,295 for the week for three to six bedrooms. Call 800-548-9688 or visit villagerealtyobx.com.

PLAY: Rees Jones's Currituck Club costs $150 to play in the summer but just $45 including cart in temperate December. You get not just a bargain but some classic Jones golf, weaving through sand dunes, wetlands, maritime forests and stunning Carolina coastland. Call 252-453-9400 or visit thecurrituckgolfclub.com. Short, tight and lined with homes, Nags Head still delivers a realistic links experience and tests your accuracy while demanding all kinds of shots. It's less taxing on your wallet at the off-season price of $45. Call 252-441-8073 or visit nagsheadgolflinks.com.
