AND WORTHY REDESIGNS
Fossil Trace Golf Club, Golden, CO
This isn't a normal bargain muni, not with its huge clubhouse, sixty-four-million-year-old fossils adjacent to the twelfth hole and wild Jim Engh design. An old kiln bisecting the first fairway serves as the target; three sandstone pillars do likewise on the twelfth. Throughout, abandoned mining equipment rusts in the rough. Water, cottonwoods, cavernous bunkers or dunelike mounds lurk off almost every tee, but so do ample bail-out areas. Front-side scoring hinges on friendly kicks off the myriad curves, bumps and noses. Expect to make up strokes on the back, which features three par threes and three par fives—including the dangerous but reachable closer, where my playing partner had his first-ever eagle. It was a fittingly memorable conclusion to an eccentric, unforgettable course.
Yardage/Par: 6,831/72. Greens Fees: $36-$50. Tee Times: 303-277-8750 or visit fossiltrace.com.
