Baz Luhrmann, famous for song-and-dance extravaganzas à la Moulin Rouge, brings Puccini's La Bohème to Broadway. The bohemians are as sexy as pop stars, but they can still pump out high C's (Broadway Theatre; 212/239-6200; opens Dec. 8).
Trevor Nunn stages British composer Nicholas Maw's Sophie's Choice, based on the William Styron novel about a Polish woman forced by the Nazis to choose between her two children. Mezzo-soprano Angelika Kirchschlager is the tortured Sophie; Rodney Gilfry, her American boyfriend Nathan (Royal Opera House, London; 44-207/304-4000; Dec. 7—21).
