Two New Parisian Boutiques

Two just-opened boutiques have both makeup pros and garden-variety lipstick junkies riveted. "My friend is a makeup artist in Germany and she sent me here to buy something—anything," explained a young man to the amused staff at Stephanemarais (217 Rue St.-Honoré; 33-1/42-61-73-22). After years of working for Chanel, Gaultier, and every fashion house in between, makeup artist Stéphane Marais has launched his own line of products manufactured by Shiseido. Architect Sergio Calatroni created the funky space and the packaging, which is decorated with art collages. "It's very conceptual," says Calatroni, fingering a lipstick tube wrapped in reproductions of works by Man Ray and Picabia. At Parfumerie Générale (6 Rue Robert-Estienne; 33-1/43-59-10-62), fashionable Parisienne Victoire de Taillac is focusing on quirky, hard-to-find cosmetics in a cheerful shop that looks as if it might sell popsicles or bonbons. Products include traditional French brands such as Friction de Foucaud and the classic fragrance collection Le Jardin Retrouvé. There's also a barber, for men who want an old-fashioned shave. —Sarah Raper
