Napa’s New Flavors

Like this article?

Travelers taking a Napa Valley tasting tour rarely have to wonder how and where their wine was made. But the same isn’t true for people interested in the provenance of their food. That’s no longer the case, with the opening of Oxbow Public Market in downtown Napa. The $11 million gourmet mall is the pet project of Steve Carlin, former manager of San Francisco’s Ferry Building marketplace. Oxbow’s stalls—under a soaring glass-and-steel ceiling—showcase homegrown, Bay Area–born culinary stars. There’s the butcher (Five Dot Ranch, with sustainably raised beef), the baker (Model Bakery, for organic stone-ground bread) and the olive-oil maker (The Olive Press, selling 14 virgin varieties). No California food destination is complete without fresh produce, and the farmers’ market outside finds seasonal growers displaying their just-picked crops. 610 First St., Napa; 707/963-1345; oxbowpublicmarket.com.
