Two years ago, the khaki-clad Scottsdale scene got a shake-up with the arrival of the city's first boutique hotel, the James. Fast-forward to 2007, and the 194-room property has been reinvented as the Mondrian Scottsdale (7353 E. Indian School Rd.; 480/308-1100; mondrian scottsdale.com; doubles from $145). The most jolting change: rigorously sleek interiors have given way to irreverent ones—think life-size sculptures of an African baobab tree and furry sheep, porcelain cornucopias in the hotel's Asia de Cuba restaurant, feathered lamps at Skybar, and Lucite boxes, each displaying a single enticing ruby-red apple, in the rooms.
