Belgium’s B&B Jewel

Like this article?

It’s not every B&B that encourages guests to be on intimate terms with the work of Europe’s most avant-garde jewelry designers. Just 20 minutes from Antwerp, and a half-hour from Brussels and Ghent, Galerie Sofie Lachaert (30 St. Jozefstraat, Tielrode; 32-3/711-1963; www.lachaert.com; doubles from $143), which exhibits the silver, gold, wood, and even paper jewelry creations of designers Karl Fritsch, Daniel Kruger, and Otto Künzli, also offers two dreamy guest rooms. The gallery, housed in a late-19th-century brick shipyard office, stands in the shadow of a chapel with a charming curate’s garden, at the point where the Durme river romantically merges with the Schelde. Breakfast, including just-laid eggs from Lachaert’s own henhouse, is served on dishes and cutlery also designed by artists Lachaert represents. She’ll happily toss in an exhaustive tour of the gallery with the price of a night’s stay.
