Naxos Quartets Perform in London

Like this article?

“The Naxos Quartets” Southbank Centre (October 9–11). They may be the first set of string quartets named after a record label. Naxos commissioned the eminent composer Sir Peter Maxwell Davies to write a cycle that turned into 10 quartets Davies calls “a novel in chapters,” and that bear, novel-like, references to the past quartet literature (including the Beethoven quartets), current events, and landscapes from Sir Peter’s life. The entire opus is being offered over one weekend at the Southbank Centre’s Purcell Room, in the same populist spirit that Naxos (sometimes referred to as a budget label) embodies: tickets sell for $8 and $15 apiece.
