A few years ago, select hotels rolled out pilot programs intended to let you breeze past the traditional front desk and right up to your room. The alternatives—receiving a keycard and a text message with your room number before arrival or getting your key from a lobby kiosk—generated lots of buzz. But the industry has been slow to embrace the concept. And it’s not so clear that electronic check-in would improve the experience for guests, particularly the kind currently getting the five-star staff treatment.
