Travelers more accustomed to high-end hotels than to hostels can now visit Mongolia's rugged terrain in comfort. Three Camel Lodge (www.threecamellodge.com; doubles from $300, including transfers and excursions), the area's first luxury wilderness camp, is set below the foothills of the Gobi-Altay Mountains on a 54-million-year-old volcanic outcropping. The 50-acre camp features 30 private gers (nomadic tents made of felt and wood) with wood-burning stoves and hand-painted wooden furniture. The natural-stone main lodge was constructed following the local Buddhist code. Guides lead guests through Mongolia's varied terrain—lunar landscapes, mountain valleys, and the red sandstone Flaming Cliffs. At night, Mongolian singers perform under the expansive sky.
