Maui's Next Shot

Maui and Lanai Hotels
With just 2,800 residents on the 141-square-mile island, Lanai's two choices are each romantic hideaways nonpareil; Maui offers more choices and more action but no less memorable an experience.

FOUR SEASONS RESORT MAUI AT WAILEA
3900 Wailea Alanui, Wailea, Maui; 808-874-8000, fourseasons.com/maui. Rooms: $335-$750. Suites: $630-$6,700.
Starting with the traditional lei greeting upon arrival, the aloha spirit here keeps this from being just another flawless link in the corporate chain. A preround Feldenkrais for Golfers Treatment at the newly renovated spa will have your shoulder turn resembling John Daly's.

KAPALUA BAY HOTEL & OCEAN VILLAS
One Bay Drive, Maui; 800-367-8000, starwood.com/kapalua. Rooms: $360-$620. Suites: $1,200-$1,500. Villas: $530-$800.
Set on a bluff overlooking Kapalua Bay, this resort, renowned for its "Hawaiian-ness" (the Hookipa cultural program, for example, will teach you how to dance hula), has been upgraded over the past five years with a $32 million renovation. All 191 guest rooms have a patio; there are also five suites and fifteen oceanfront villas available.

THE LODGE AT KOELE
Lanai City, Lanai; 800-321-4666, islandoflanai.com. Rooms: $375-$525. Suites: $725-$2,200.
The rare inland Hawaiian hotel, with 102 rooms and suites, the absence of ocean views is well compensated for by stone fireplaces, the two porches from which to watch wild turkeys wander and the comfy Pacific-themed Great Hall. For all the sedate leafiness, you may well be overwhelmed by the urge to take up croquet while here; at a minimum, visit the neat eighteen-hole putting course, replete with water hazards.

MANELE BAY HOTEL
Lanai City, Lanai; 800-321-4666, islandoflanai.com. Rooms: $375-$795. Suites: $725-$3,000.
Grand without seeming grandiose, this Mediterranean villa-style hotel set on red lava cliffs presides over the white sands of curving Hulopoe Beach. Five lavish formal gardens, landscaped courtyards, waterfalls and flowers everywhere augment the allure of the 249 rooms and suites.

MAUI PRINCE HOTEL, MAKENA RESORT
5400 Makena Alanui, Makena, Maui; 800-321-6248, mauiprincehotel.com. Rooms: $310-$480. Suites: $600-$1,500.
Set at the base of Haleakala, all 310 rooms and nineteen suites open to a courtyard with Japanese gardens and koi ponds. An Asian meditation garden surrounds the hotel, and the many waterfalls and streams add to the sense of calm. Pristine Maluaka Beach is steps away.

THE RITZ-CARLTON, KAPALUA
One Ritz-Carlton Drive, Maui; 808-669-6200, ritzcarlton.com/resorts/kapalua. Rooms: $375-$535. Suites: $635-$1,035.
It's Ritz-y and it's Hawaiian, thanks in part to the local artists' depictions of Maui scenes throughout. Adjacent to the three-tiered swimming pool is the 1,617-yard par-fifty-four Village Putting Course. All 548 rooms and suites have a balcony; the Banyan Tree offers eclectic Pacific cuisine.
