While some hotel brands are encouraging visitors to unplug, with perks like free massages and snorkeling sessions offered to those who surrender their devices, others—namely the Desert Springs outpost of hospitality juggernaut Marriott—are taking a rather different approach: encouraging the traveler’s obsession with Instagram by offering “selfie sticks” at check-ins. 

In fact, Marriott is going a a step further with its "Your Spring Selfie" package, not only providing a Bluetooth-enabled selfie stick—that is, a collapsible rod used to extend one's arm reach the way Inspector Gadget would if he needed to take a photo of himself—but also "installing," according to the release, "a series of 'selfie spots'" at its JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa. The brand is basically suggesting great places for self-portraits, where there is "ample room for utilizing the stick without disturbing other guests."

Amazingly, this is not the first time a major hospitality player has included selfie sticks (which, by the way, are shunned or outright banned in many tourist hotspots) in special packages; the Kimpton hotels and Four Seasons are also hot-to-trot on enabling folks to #lovethyselfie.

Oh, and in case you're wondering: no, this does not mark the End of Days for luxury hospitality.
