North Haven

An Ideal North Haven Day Trip
Take the ferry over, and bring a bike instead of a car—spaces on the ferry are extremely limited. Buy a picnic sandwich at the Landing (Main St.; 207/867-2060), then get pedaling. There's a wonderful 11-mile bike ride around the island's periphery, starting on South Shore Road. Stop at Mullen's Head Park for a swim in the creek or a hike on one of the many trails that hug the coastline. Continuing on the loop, North Shore Road is set high above the water, affording an excellent panorama of the inner Penobscot Bay, the very waters Robert McCloskey illustrated in Blueberries for Sal and One Morning in Maine. Finally, bike past Pulpit Harbor and into town for an ice-cream cone at the Landing before you catch the last ferry, at 3:45 P.M., back to Rockland.
