The ferry to the island leaves from Rockland, a 3 1/2-hour drive from Boston, or 2 hours from Portland. Mid-Coast Limo (800/937-2424; www.midcoastlimo.com) will meet your flight in Portland and drop you at the ferry. Colgan Air (800/428-4322; www.usairways.com) has daily flights to Rockland from Boston.
Where to Stay
Gaining a toehold on North Haven is tricky. Try Our Place Inn & Cottages (704 Crabtree Point Rd.; 207/867-4998; www.ourplaceinn.com; doubles from $80), a farmhouse with five rooms and three cottages. Also consider neighboring Vinalhaven, which has more options (www.vinalhaven.org). On the mainland, the Samoset Resort (220 Warrenton St., Rockport; 800/341-1650 or 207/594-2511; www.samoset.com; doubles from $200) is a 178-room oceanside spread with golf and a kids' program.
