Our Favorites: Rangeley

Return to main article

A 2 1/2-hour drive north of Portland, the Rangeley area is 99 percentlakes, ponds, and forest. Rangeley Lake is in the town center; smaller, quieter Loon is 10 miles north.

Where to Stay
There are a couple dozen properties in the area with lakeside "housekeeping" cabins (www.rangeleymaine.com), but the Rangeley Inn (2443 Main St.; 207/864-3341; www.rangeleyinn.com; doubles from $99), a grand vintage hotel, is several cuts above.

What Not to Miss
The spectral organic produce at First Farm (46 Gull Pond Rd.; 207/864-5539). The lobster rolls and ice cream at the Pine Tree Frosty (2459 Main St.; 207/864-5894), where you can feed the ducks. The hand-picked books—with recommendations written on Post-its by proprietor Wess Connally—at Books, Lines & Thinkers (2513 Main St.; 207/864-4355).
