New Japanese Film

Like this article?

An unemployed Tokyo salaryman (Koji Yakusho) travels to the rural Noto Peninsula in search of a stolen gold Buddha hidden by a friend years earlier in a house near a red bridge. There his life takes a new direction when he falls for a mysterious kleptomaniac (Misa Shimizu) who secretes water while experiencing physical pleasure. Cinematic shaman Shohei Imamura (The Ballad of Narayama, The Eel) conjures a hilarious and uncanny vision of small-town Japanese life, with picturesque fishermen, local punks, and a single African exchange student. (Warm Water Under a Red Bridge opens this month.)
