Live Feed from the Colosseum

Starting this fall, visitors to the Roman Colosseum's Web site (www.colosseumweb.org) will be able to embark on a tour of the ancient amphitheater without ever leaving home. The landmark arena has been outfitted with more than 40 Web cams and miles of fiber-optic cable, providing free live feeds of the tiered seats that once held close to 70,000 spectators, as well as underground vaults where lions were caged. For an annual fee of $50, you can become a member of the site's archaeological club and access a Web cam via your own PC, zooming in on secret passageways that can't be explored in person; proceeds will benefit the ongoing Web project. There are also plans to equip the Roman Forum and the Domus Aurea with Web cams. Coming soon: interactive gladiator battles?
