T+L Reports: Latvian Lockdown

Like this article?

If you're nostalgic for the bad old days of the Soviet Union, the Latvian resort city of Liepaja has just the attraction. A group aptly called KGB has organized tours of the town's infamous Karosta Prison (371-63/69470; www.karostascietums.lv), which played host to political dissidents from pre-revolution days and, later, Cold War offenders, until it was finally shut down in 1997. For just under $10, brave souls can spend the night in the two-story red-brick jail, where they don prison garb and are locked in a bare cell. Not feeling that courageous?Take a 90-minute daytime tour for $6 to experience a mock interrogation and shorter lockup—unless you disobey the guards, in which case you're sent to solitary.
