Khmer Comforts

Jackie O stayed here in 1968, on her pilgrimage to the temples of Angkor. So did Peter O'Toole, while filming Joseph Conrad's Lord Jim. And now you can, too. Built in the 1960's and located mere steps from the Royal Palace, King Sihanouk's guest villa has just been transformed into the 12-room Amansara. In keeping with the signature Aman style, the tones are earthy and the fixtures streamlined. Every suite has its own terrace and water garden, and makes the most of the original architecture with sleek lounge chairs, steel-gray stone benches, and Cambodian silk. Across the street, check out Amansara's previous residents, in the vintage photos that line the walls at the recently opened FCC (855-63/760-283; dinner for two $40), an offshoot of Phnom Penh's Foreign Correspondents Club. Amansara, Road to Angkor, Siem Reap; 800/477-9180; www.amanresorts.com; doubles from $600.
