I'm on the stage of the Pavilion at the Ravinia Festival, a summer concert series with all sorts of performers—from jazz to pop—in a gorgeous outdoor setting. I was singing there for the second time. I stayed at the Whitehall Hotel, downtown off Michigan Avenue. I love older hotels: they're smaller, more intimate, quieter
MY KIND OF TOWN: Chicago is one of my favorite cities in the world. I like to shop on the Magnificent Mile; Neiman Marcus is really fine! And that walk along Michigan Avenue is so beautiful on a nice day. My father's family is from Chicago. I like the look and feel of this city. It's not as dirty as New York; the air is clean. The people are a bit warmer and they seem to be more content with their lives. You don't see as many who are off-center.
MUSICAL NOTES: The music scene in Chicago is really vibrant. It's the capital of the blues—I dig that. You'd have to go down South to get that high a concentration of blues anywhere else.
