Just Back from Rome: Matthew Marks

OCCUPATION Gallery owner HOME BASE New York ROMAN HOLIDAY Marks, who represents 25 international artists at his namesake Chelsea gallery, frequently travels abroad for art fairs and studio visits. He recently attended a show of new work by British painter (and old friend) Gary Hume in Hannover, Germany. Afterward, the two decamped for a weekend in Rome. HISTORY LESSON On this trip, Marks skipped most of Trastevere's cutting-edge galleries and focused on the city's Baroque and Renaissance treasures, such as Caravaggio's Calling of Saint Matthew in San Luigi dei Francesi (5 Via Santa Giovanna d'Arco; 39-06/688-271). "When you stand in front of it, you know you're experiencing the work the way the artist intended," Marks explains. TASTER'S CHOICE "Ristorante Nino [11 Via Borgognona; 39-06/679-5676; dinner for two $120] feels as if it has been there forever," he says. "They make the most delicious mini artichoke soufflé." PAST MASTERS "When I think about Rome, I think about Bernini, BorrominiÑall the things you can't see anywhere else," Marks says. "I love looking at the façades and fountains. It's where architecture becomes sculpture."
