After working his way up from high-school camper to CEO of the Boulder Outdoor Survival School, adventure-travel guru Josh Bernstein is now launching a new show—Into the Unknown with Josh Bernstein—on the Discovery Channel this month. Whether to South American jungles or sub-Saharan plains, his trips require X-Acto–sharp packing skills. T+L got the scoop on what he took on a recent visit to Peru:

Bag “Filson is the best luggage made,” Bernstein says of his twill bag. “Beautiful, rugged, and my constant companion as I travel the world.”

Uniform On location, he wore a waterproof Crag Mountain softshell and a quick-dry Omni-Dry-Tamiami shirt, both by Columbia. “They were perfect for the rainy season in Peru.” Bernstein also packed organic, fair-trade Loomstate Mission jeans. “My all-time favorite boots are Frye’s Harness 8R’s, for anything from hiking in the Andes to exploring the markets of Lima.”

Accessories Bernstein travels with minimal and understated accessories, like the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller (“it’s tough as nails”) and Oakley’s Polarized Nanowire 4.0 sunglasses, which blocked the glare out at the fortress of Kuelap, 10,000 feet above sea level.

Gadget “We filmed in remote villages—Chachapoyas, María, Leymebamba.” Bernstein’s Garmin eTrex Vista HCx GPS kept him on the map.
