Inn of the Month: Stockton, NJ

Three years ago, some friends from Chicago (two bankers and an artist) bought the Woolverton Inn, a 10-acre estate between New York City and Philadelphia. Since then they have transformed the 1792 stone manor house into a luxurious country getaway. Many of the rooms have fireplaces, feather beds, and oversized tubs. Last summer, the owners added four new cottages on the property, including the two-story Sojourn Loft, with an old-world travel motif: Moroccan lamps, Persian rugs, leather armchairs. After a day of antiquing in nearby Lambertville, relax in your room's two-person Brazilian hammock while watching Betty and Lois, two of the resident sheep, in the flower-filled meadow below. Breakfast (served in bed or in the garden) is decadent, especially the "Dutch babies"—baked German-style pancakes—or the cinnamon waffles with maple-syrup ice cream and sweet berries from the strawberry patch (guests are welcome to go picking, too).
Woolverton Inn, 6 Woolverton Rd., Stockton, N.J.; 888/264-6648 or 609/397-0802; www.woolvertoninn.com; doubles from $110, cottages from $250.
