In a seafaring town filled with houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, the brand-new Inn at Stonington manages to look right at home. No creaking floorboards here: the interior mixes details like white-painted wainscoting and vintage prints with elegant furnishings (Asian-themed room No. 7, shown here, is a favorite) and modern comforts (Frette linens and robes, Jacuzzis in 10 of the 12 rooms). By day, guests can borrow bikes or kayaks, browse for antiques, or stroll to the lighthouse at Stonington Point. Sunset-lovers can return to the inn for a glass of wine on the deck overlooking the harbor, then drive across town to Boom, a dockside restaurant with yachts for sale next door. Why not ditch the car and sail away?

Inn at Stonington, 60 Water St., Stonington, Conn.; 860/535-2000, fax 860/535-8193; doubles from $195.
