Which airport makes flying a pleasure?

The new Richard Rogers–designed Terminal 4 at Madrid’s Barajas Airport has high, noise-absorbent bamboo ceilings. And at Berlin’s Tegel International Airport, many of the gates have their own security and check-in areas, so your taxi can literally drop you at your departure point.

What’s always in your carry-on?

At the moment, books by American authors: I just finished Paul Auster’s The Brooklyn Follies and Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. I never travel without my iPod—currently I’m listening to classic Brazilian music.

What do you do during downtime?

Markets are a good way to get a sense of a city. The Mercat de Santa Caterina in the old quarter of Barcelona is a favorite. There’s a stall inside called Cocinas. I stop there for a lunch of fish and fresh vegetables.

What’s your road vice?

Local beer. It’s reliable and good. And you can find it anywhere in the world.
