Today, April 13, marks what would have been Thomas Jefferson’s 272nd birthday. And what better way to celebrate than with a Thomas Jefferson-inspired tasting menu?
Plume—the restaurant within Washington, D.C.’s luxury hotel The Jefferson—has fulfilled the dining dreams of every war re-enactor and Leslie Knope-style politico with a themed experience for the books. The special menu has been borrowed from aspects of Jefferson’s life at Monticello, his home in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Diners can look forward to a spread of Green & White Asparagus Mousse, Stingray Oyster Gratin, American Shad, Grilled Veal Strip Loin and Quince Apple Pie. A few notes on the dishes’ presidential tie-ins:
• White asparagus: This is a nod to Monticello’s surrounding country—and Jefferson’s relationship and travels within France.
• Stingray Oysters: This is the quintessential Chesapeake oyster, meaning it’s very possible that Jefferson enjoyed these sweet and lightly salty seafood.
• Shad: A herring-like fish, this variety had a moment in the late 1800’s and it now making a comeback as a local favorite.
• English peas: Jefferson grew multiple varieties of these peas in his garden.
• Quince: Back in the day, you would have found this apple-pear-cross in Jefferson’s south orchard.
