Island Tastes

Return to main article

SHAVE ICE A paper cone of coarse ice doused with syrup (strawberry, passion fruit), and way too sweet for most non-kids. You can find shave-ice cafés and trucks all over the island; the one shown above is in Poipu.

SMOOTHIES Ubiquitous and typically made from frozen fruit rather than syrup and ice. The snack wagon in Hanalei makes a good one.

FISH TACOS AND THE LIKE That same wagon serves some of the best fish tacos on the island. Hanalei Mixed Plate (5-5 190 Kuhio Hwy., Hanalei; 808/826-7888), a take-out joint with a few outdoor tables, has good, simply prepared lunch specials of local ono, opah, and ahi.

SUSHI A great bet for dinner. Sushi Blues (5-5 190 Kuhio Hwy., Hanalei; 808/826-9701), with live music, was our favorite spot. Kintaro's (4-370 Kuhio Hwy., Kapaa; 808/822-3341) not only has a first-rate sushi bar but also a teppanyaki corner, where chefs do the whole Benihana thing. Call ahead for a reservation.
