Many veteran Tour players make qualifying for the Ryder Cup their top priority for the year, and they go all out to do that. But some younger players will actually try to avoid making the team, feeling, perhaps, that they’re not ready for the pressure and the spotlight. What you see are guys banging away week to week in springtime, trying to finish high, make some big checks, keep their cards—then lo and behold with four months to go they’re number eight or nine on the Ryder Cup points list. That’s when you ask the question: Do they want it?At that point they still have time to bail. And it starts happening. Players who are on the number and don’t want to be there eventually play their way out. Do they know that’s what they’re doing?Down deep they do.
