Machrihanish dunes

The ambitious developers of Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club (machrihanishdunes.com) have set an opening date of August 15 for the much-anticipated seaside links, the first to be built on the west coast of Scotland in a hundred years. The 7,250-yard layout, designed by David McLay Kidd, will have five sets of tees. This in itself is unusual for Scotland, and even more so is the fact that unlike at many of the country’s prestigious courses, visitors won’t be told which markers to use. Despite this nod to American preferences, the similarities with stateside resort courses end there. Says superintendent Euan Grant, “We’re not going to be striping fairways to please you with prettiness. The beauty of the course is in the ruggedness of its natural terrain.”

Visitors will likely find that the town’s two courses, old and new, offer an appealing contrast in styles: Unlike Machrihanish Golf Club, which but for its famous first hole sits at a slight distance from the water, Machrihanish Dunes lies hard against the ocean. Five of its tees and six of its greens perch at the edge of the beach.
