Hot Stix Stats

Get the right three-wood First, decide if you want a distance bomber or a club that hits a higher, softer-landing shot. Generally, a lower launch angle with less spin yields more distance on a flatter trajectory and a higher launch angle translates to more elevation and less roll. Although most three-woods come with fifteen degrees of loft, launch angles will vary depending on your swing and on the club's center of gravity, as our tester discovered. Below, the Hot Stix results.

Club TaylorMade Burner Steel
Launch Angle 15.6 degrees
Backspin 4,165 rpm
Distance 220 yards

Club Cobra Speed LD
Launch Angle 13.8
Backspin 3,990
Distance 227

Club Sonartec GS Tour
Launch Angle 13.3
Backspin 3,663
Distance 227

Club Nickent 4DX
Launch Angle 11.6
Backspin 3,780
Distance 224

Club Nicklaus Dual Point
Launch Angle 11.2
Backspin 3,650
Distance 228

About Hot Stix Stats For this issue, HOT STIX GOLF (480-513-1333; hotstixgolf.com) tested five three-woods on a robot set to swing at a speed of 95 mph. The ball used in testing was the Callaway HX Tour.
