Iowa
The Preserve at Honey Creek Resort, Moravia (resort).
Opened: August
Located in the newly developed Honey Creek State Park, this southern Iowa resort boasts a mostly open course near Rathbun Lake. The sixteenth and eighteenth holes each have fairways divided by bunker complexes; in both cases, the shorter line of attack bears the greater degree of risk.

Mount Washington Course, Bretton Woods (resort).
Opened: August
Brian Silva reconstructed this 1915 Donald Ross layout at the venerable Mount Washington Resort using the master’s original hole-by-hole sketches. Among other things, the renderings instruct that bunkers, or “pits,” be dug up to five feet deep and mounds be built to precise though varying heights. The restored course also includes features that were drafted but never built, such as a Principal’s Nose–style bunker complex.

Texas
Sherman Hills Golf Club, Sherman (public).
Opened: August
Prone to Texas winds that can wreak havoc on mis-hit shots, this daily-fee course an hour north of Dallas demands ball control above all. The sloping fairways on the hilly, rocky site are flanked by stands of bur oak and black walnut. Post Oak Creek and its various tributaries lace through the second nine, and holes thirteen through fifteen amble through a lovely pecan orchard.
