New Course Review | November 2006

Course of the Month

Saguaro Course at We-Ko-Pa Golf Club Fort McDowell, Arizona (public). Opening: December
Five years after Scottsdale-based architect Scott Miller’s Cholla course at We-Ko-Pa opened to rave reviews from Arizonans and out-of-staters alike, the minimalist team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw has fashioned a second act in this cactus-studded patch of the Sonoran Desert. Their new Saguaro layout flows in broad strokes across the rippled desert floor and up and down gradual dips and rises. Ragged-edged bunkers bleed into the native scrub, while low-profile greens send misguided shots sliding off toward tricky humps and hollows. Moving scant amounts of earth, the architects hewed to their preferred style of creating natural-looking, ground-hugging holes that favor a bump-and-run approach as well as the Scottsdale area’s prototypical aerial game. Although many players will undoubtedly choose to ride (the cart paths of decompposed granite are blessedly unobtrusive), thanks to the proximity of its greens and tees, the Saguaro promises to be one of the most pleasurable walks in the region.
ARCHITECTS: Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. YARDAGE: TBD. PAR: 71. GREENS FEE: $195. TEE TIMES: 480-836-9000, www.wekopa.com.
