Ridge Creek Golf Club, Dinuba (public).
Deep, ominous bunkers, wispy border grasses and a nearly treeless tract lend a British feel to this course in the San Joaquin Valley, thirty miles southeast of Fresno. Therouting is folded into a former fruit orchard outside the city of Dinuba, which owns the course. The sandy soil allowed swales, ramps and hillocks to be molded along the fairways and around the greens, encouraging the ground game.
General Burnside Island State Park Golf Course, Burnside (public).
Thanks to a makeover from Brian Ault, this former ugly ducking of the Kentucky State Parks Golf Trail debuted in the spring with freshly sodded zoysia fairways and slippery bent-grass greens. Located on Lake Cumberland, the short, sporty course (which originally opened in 1959) features five holes by the water and a newly configured back nine that twists through a beautiful lakeside forest.
