Iron Review 2006

Hot Stix Stat

Moment of inertia (MOI) is a measure of how much clubheads twist on off-center hits. Irons that twist less have higher MOIs and are especially beneficial to higher handicappers. Some better players prefer lower MOIs because they find the clubheads easier to manipulate.

We asked HOT STIX GOLF (480-513-1333; www.hotstixgolf.com), which objectively tests clubs and balls to help custom fit players, to test the MOI of the irons in this issue. For this stat, HotStix multiplies the weight of each clubhead by the amount it twists on specific off-center hits. The average MOI of all eighty-six irons the company recently tested was 2409, with the highest score 2827 (Nike Slingshot OSS) and the lowest 2013 (Titleist 660). Note that all of the irons reviewed here, including those made for better players, have MOIs well above average.
