FOXX HOLES? Comedian Jamie Foxx's portrayal of Ray Charles in the movie Ray has made him an early contender for an Oscar, but it was a golf movie that was supposed to be Foxx's breakout film. Two years ago New Line Cinema bought the rights to Ingle Woods, a comedy about a smoothswinging fast-food slinger who goes pro. Although Ingle Woods has a writer lined up and Foxx has a decent swing, the film has been stalled "in development" since 2003, "which means it probably isn't going to happen," says a New Line spokesperson.
SOX APPEAL The Boston Red Sox' run of World Series futility may have finally ended, but another streak is now in its thirteenth year: the Tim Wakefield Celebrity Golf Classic & Memorabilia Auction, which takes place January 28 and 29 at the Majors Golf Club in Palm Bay, Florida. In addition to Wakefield, who is reportedly close to a scratch player, expect to see a number of his teammates, including Johnny Damon and Derek Lowe, as well as former big leaguers Jim Rice, Phil and Joe Niekro, and Ken Griffey Sr. Proceeds from the event benefit the Space Coast Early Intervention Center, a not-for-profit preschool for special-needs children. Wakefield, however, isn't the only philanthropy-minded Sox hurler: Curt Schilling hosts two annual charity golf tournaments—one in Scottsdale, the other in Philadelphia—that help fund research to cure ALS.
ROCKIN' ROBIN New Jersey's venerable Pine Valley Golf Club certainly doesn't need to court celebrity members, which is why the appearance of actor Chris O'Donnell's name on the new-members list this past fall came as something of a surprise. While O'Donnell, who rose to fame as Robin in two Batman movies, isn't a golf superhero, he does hold a seven-handicap at Bel-Air Country Club and did carry the bag for his older brother, John, who after five attempts qualified for the 2004 U.S. Amateur at Winged Foot last August and, the following month, participated in the annual Crump Cup, a midam event at Pine Valley.
