"When I first saw the site for Stone Eagle, I thought this must be what the surface of Mars looks like: rocky, rugged and red," says the course's designer, Tom Doak. The nineteen-hole (there's a bye hole) private layout is carved from the hillside above Palm Desert, California—1,000 feet high—overlooking the Coachella Valley. The 6,801-yard course opened last November.
The dramatic par-three fifteenth typifies the course. The green, perched on the rim of an arroyo, is visually deceiving. "There's not as much tilt from front to back as your eyes will tell you," Doak says. "It's a fooler."
Stone Eagle Golf Club is at the heart of a 700-acre community with forty-four planned luxury residences tucked below the course. Membership is limited to 450, but applications are still being accepted. For more information, call 760-773-6223 or visit stoneeagleclub.com.
