Half a mile high in Patagonia sits the first Nicklaus Design course in South America, just outside San Martin de los Andes, Argentina. The Chapelco Golf & Resort course plays through a valley in the snowcapped Andes. "We didn't need to go in and create a golf course," says codesigner Jack Nicklaus II. He and his father "only had to make the course fit into what nature provided." The 7,163-yard course celebrated its grand opening in February. The 427-yard twelfth hole (pictured) challenges players with a tee shot that must carry 180 yards of water. The property includes 430 residential lots, and the LoiSuites Chapelco Golf Resort & Spa, a luxury hotel, is scheduled to open in December 2007. "We liken the area to what Lake Tahoe or perhaps Vail or Aspen resembled some fifty years ago," says Nicklaus the younger. For more info call 011-54/2972-427-713 or visit chapelcogolf.com.
