Big changes have occurred since we last caught up with the mad geniuses of club-fitting at Hot Stix Golf ("A Perfect Fit," March/April 2006). Founder Mark Timms sold to an investment group, StormWind Ventures, and in March the company opened the Hot Stix Performance Center at Legend Trail Golf Club, a ten-acre fitting facility in North Scottsdale. Being set up at the south end of Legend Trail's range allows Hot Stix to go beyond what it already provides at its vaunted lab, offering "game-fitting," an evaluation of how a golfer's clubs perform in real-world situations.
Full-swing analysis benefits greatly from the fitter's ability to see the player's ball flight from start to finish, but it's wedge-fitting that really flourishes in an outdoor environment. At the short-game practice area, golfers can hit shots from a variety of grassy lies or from the sand. Hot Stix then determines the players' ideal grind—and whether they really need that lob wedge in their bag. $795 for a six-station, full-bag club-fitting. Call 877-513-1333 or visit hotstixgolf.com.
