New York Botanical Garden New Spaces

Just in time for May flowers, the New York Botanical Garden opens its Herbarium—with more than 6.5 million specimens, some preserved from the expeditions of Darwin and Captain Cook—and renovated library, where 775,000 books, illustrations, and artifacts catalogue exotic plant life. The public can get a rare peek at the Herbarium, the largest plant-research collection in the Western Hemisphere, on May 11 and 18. In the library's newly inaugurated gallery, an exhibition called "Plants and Gardens Portrayed" includes a sampling of botanical books and prints from the archives. Visitors can also head to the gift shop for a limited-edition print from the library's collection. New York Botanical Garden, 200th St. and Kazimiroff Blvd., Bronx; 718/817-8700; library exhibit through July 31.
