Europe's most-visited tourist attractions: Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes

David Nicolas

No. 9 (tie) Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, Lourdes, France

Annual Visitors: 6 million

A 14-year-old girl named Bernadette Soubirous experienced 18 visions of the Virgin Mary in the Grotto of Massabielle back in 1858. Later, her friend’s arm was said to be healed by spring water in the cave. Now the cavern and surrounding area form a Catholic sanctuary that includes the original spring, two basilicas, three museums, nine chapels, and other places of worship and meeting rooms. lourdes-france.org —April Orcutt
